Custom

The custom of keeping “terms” in the Dining Hall is one of the oldest customs of the Society. The origin of the custom stems from the fact that practitioners and students of law needed to eat close to their place of work; therefore, King’s Inns provided an eating–place convenient to where the courts were held. Today, the student keeping his/her terms finds ample opportunity for conversation and discussion but, more importantly, they meet and come to know the people who will be future colleagues in the profession. The tradition of dining helps in the development of a bond of trust. A mutual respect is created which links fellow students, the barrister, and the judges with and before whom, they will practice in the future.

The tradition of dining is all about building a spirit of collegiality. We know our current students enjoy our dining experience at King’s Inns as did all those who went before them for over 200 years. We also encourage our students and barristers to avail of the opportunity to bring guests on suitable nights. It is a unique and special way to entertain and share our magnificent Dining Hall.
