Custom

The custom of keeping “terms” in the Dining Hall is one of the oldest customs of the Society. The origin of the custom stems from the fact that practitioners / barristers and students of law needed to eat close to their place of work; therefore, King’s Inns provided an eating–place convenient to where the courts were held.

Today our members which comprises of barristers (practicing and non–practicing), judges, benchers and students find ample opportunity for conversation and discussion but, more importantly, they meet and come to know the people in their profession.

For the accommodation of the Members and Students of the Society, Commons shall be provided in the Dining Hall during the Law Terms…Michaelmas, Hilary, and Easter.

The tradition of dining is all about building a spirit of collegiality. Current students and barrister members enjoy our dining experience at King’s Inns as did all those who went before them for over 200 years. King’s Inns encourages students and barristers to avail of the opportunity to bring guests on suitable nights. It is a unique and special way to entertain and share our magnificent Dining Hall.
