Ms Justice Mary Irvine to become first female President of the High Court

King’s Inns would like to congratulate Ms Justice Mary Irvine on her nomination as the new President of the High Court, but also in making history being the first woman appointed to such a role.

King’s Inns CEO and Under Treasurer Mary Griffin welcomes the nomination and said:

“In the year King’s Inns is hosting a ‘celebrating a century of equal opportunities legislation’ series to commemorate 100 years since the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919 was enacted, it is pioneering to see a woman nominated for this prestigious role.”

She will now be formally appointed to the post by President Michael D Higgins, in succession to Mr Justice Peter Kelly who will retire on 18 June 2020.

Ms Justice Irvine is a distinguished alumna of King’s Inns. In 2004, she was elected a Bencher and will now become an ex officio member of the Council and Trustee of King’s Inns.
