Join the King’s Inns Book Club

Do you like reading books? More importantly, do you love discussing your reads with other bookworms? Our Librarian and Dean are hosting a Book Club for students, members and the wider alumni community at King’s Inns.

Here’s how it will work

  • We will organise about five meetings in the course of this academic year, via Zoom. Meetings will take place in the evening, at a time when we hope most of you will be able to attend.
  • We will read books related to law or by legal authors, but NO textbooks or academic books. We may also include some books related to other topics.
  • You do not have to have read the whole book in order to come along to the meeting but just be aware that there may be spoilers during the chat about the book if you haven’t got to the end by the time we meet online.
  • You don’t have to attend every meeting, please sign up at any time to come along to the next book club meeting.

The inaugural meeting of the King’s Inns Book Club was held on Monday 30 November 2020, where we discussed “Fake Law” by The Secret Barrister. We were delighted when The Secret Barrister interacted with the Dean on Twitter in the run up to the event, although we can’t guarantee the same level of interaction from all our authors!

At our second meeting we had another great evening discussing ‘The Center Cannot Hold’ by Elyn R Saks, a beautifully written account of the life of a successful lawyer who describes her own experience of mental health issues with clarity, humour and insight.

For our third book club, we surveyed everyone who had already signed up and they voted for the book they would like to read next from a selection of titles. The winner was “The Trial – a history from Socrates to OJ Simpson” by Sadakat Kadri and we held a lively discussion about this book on Monday, 1 March.

The next book club will be held on Monday, 26 April at 7 pm. After polling current subscribers again this week, the next book selected is:

“In Your Defence: Stories of Life and Law” by Sarah Langford

How to get involved

  1. For now, simply get hold of the fourth book, “In Your Defence: Stories of Life and Law” by Sarah Langford, and get reading.
