Former student, and now lawyer–linguist with the European Parliament in Brussels, Jennifer Moore, highlights the benefits of undertaking an Advanced Diploma in Lawyer–linguistics and Legal Translation in her profession life and career.

The European Union is seeking to employ over 20 lawyer–linguists with high competence in Irish. Lawyer–linguists, who have law degrees and/or professional legal qualifications, ensure the standard of the various language versions of European legislation. Lawyer–linguists also translate pleadings and judgments in the Court of Justice. These posts are situated in Brussels and Luxembourg. Pay and conditions as excellent. The aim of this course is to prepare students for the EU’s recruitment process.

Classes in Irish grammar, legal terminology and translation skills are delivered Monday and Wednesday evenings during the academic year 6pm–9pm beginning 7th October 2019 up to the final examinations on the 4th and 5th April 2020. Classes on Irish and European legal systems and sessions on psychometric testing and the EU’s recruitment process will be delivered through Irish over four weekends.

As part of the course there will be a study visit to EU Institutions in Brussels and Luxembourg 21–23 October 2019 and a formal dining night in King’s Inns will be arranged for participants towards the end of the course.

The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht provides monetary support for this course.

“I really enjoy my work and King’s Inns’ Advanced Diploma in Lawyer–linguistics and Legal Translation was a great help to me in achieving this position.

It was an excellent course, if somewhat challenging. The subject matter was very practical and is of great help in the workplace. I learned a great deal and the standard of teaching wastop notch. Materials used on the course are of use to me on a daily basis.”

This diploma is suitable for law graduates or people with professional legal qualifications who wish to secure employment with the EU. A degree in Irish is not necessary but a high standard of Irish is required as well as the desire to improve one’s command of the language. Computer skills are also necessary as is an openness to acquiring a third European language.

Candidate must show a satisfactory level of ability in Irish in an entrance exam which shall be conducted in King’s Inns, Henrietta Street, Dublin 1, Monday 23 September 2019, 18:00–18:30. If you achieved TEG B2 (full credit) or higher in or since 2017, it will suffice to produce evidence of this to King’s Inns rather than sitting the entrance exam. (All information at teg.ie). The limited number of places on the course is awarded on merit.

Application deadline for the course is Monday, September 16th, 2019. To learn more about the Advanced Diploma in Lawyer–linguistics and Legal Translation, click here
