The development of new programmes is conducted systematically. Sufficient time is allowed for internal and external consultations with stakeholders. This includes an evaluation of new programmes by the appropriate internal decision-making structures, allowing for consideration of new programmes by both management and King’s Inns governance.
The policy and procedures for the development of new programmes is set out in the Programme Development and Approval Policy.
Learner admission requirements are pre-defined and published on the King’s Inns website and in the Education Rules.
The scale and current education provision was central to the development of the Access, Transfer and Progression Policy. Consideration was also given to national policies on Access, Transfer and Progression (ATP) and in the knowledge that a White Paper on ATP is due to be published by QQI.
The principles underpinning the development of the policy on access, transfer and progression include:
The use of credit and credit accumulation possibilities,
Fit-for-purpose admission and recognition procedures,
Publication of accessible ATP information for learners,
Collection and reporting of relevant ATP data, and,
Internal monitoring and review of ATP procedures.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) ensures that non-formal and informal learning are recognised and can be used as part of the admissions process. The Recognition of Prior Learning Policy sets out the policy and process by which prior learning is identified, assessed and recognised.
Programme delivery is monitored in a way that facilitates the identification of needs and the modification and adjustment of a programme and delivery method/s as appropriate. The Programme Monitoring and Review Policy applies to all programmes leading to a King's Inns award or a joint award with another institution and all programmes leading to an award on the National Framework of Qualifications.
The policy aims to ensure that all programmes are regularly evaluated and updated to maintain their academic quality, relevance and currency, and to enhance the learning experience and outcomes for learners. The policy also aims to ensure that all programmes comply with the standards and criteria of external bodies, where appropriate. This includes the Legal Services Regulatory Authority (LSRA), Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) and the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland (MMI), where applicable to the programme in question.
The policy recognises that programme monitoring and programme reviews are integral parts of the quality assurance and continuous improvement cycle, and that they should be embedded, integrated and ongoing, involving both internal and external stakeholders. The policy defines two main types of programme evaluation:
Programme monitoring is a regular process of collecting and analysing feedback and data on the delivery, performance and impact of a programme, and identifying and implementing actions for improvement.
Programme review is a periodic process of conducting a comprehensive and critical appraisal of one or more programmes, based on self-evaluation and external peer review, and resulting in recommendations for enhancement or change.
The Learner Feedback Policy establishes a framework for fostering a culture of quality enhancement and continuous improvement, transparency, and mutual respect. Learner feedback is critical for shaping a dynamic, responsive academic environment that prioritises high-quality education and values the contributions of learners at King’s Inns.
The policy sets out the principles, processes, and expectations for collecting, analysing, and using learner feedback.
