Academic Programmes

Barrister–at–Law Degree

The Barrister–at–Law degree is a professional course that leads to:

  • A highly–skilled professional qualification that bridges the gap between the academic study of law and its practise;

  • Becoming a barrister member of The Honorable Society of King’s Inns, entering the Register of Members of the Society;

  • Eligibility to be called to the Bar in order to practise as a barrister in Ireland;

  • Eligibility to be entered on the Roll of Practising Barristers, maintained by the Legal Services Regulatory Authority (LSRA); and

  • Eligibility to become a subscribing barrister member of King’s Inns, joining a lifelong community of barristers and access to many benefits that enhance your career prospects.

Diploma in Legal Studies

The Diploma in Legal Studies is a two-year law course leading to:

  • A recognised qualification in law

  • Eligibility to sit the Entrance Examination for the Barrister–at–Law degree

The Diploma provides a strong legal foundation and develops skills and competencies that are transferable, portable, and internationally recognised. It is delivered by expert legal practitioners.

History, Heritage & Campus

King’s Inns is steeped in architectural and cultural heritage. In 1800, the eminent architect James Gandon—designer of Dublin’s Custom House and the Four Courts—was commissioned by the benchers to design a new home for the Society on Henrietta Street, following the decline of the Inns’ original premises on the site of the present Four Courts.

Visitors attending the Open Day are encouraged to enjoy the King’s Inns park, a tranquil space between lectures and tours. The landscaped grounds feature statues and mature trees, including the famous Hungry Tree—a large London plane tree that appears to be slowly engulfing an iron bench and has become one of Dublin’s most photographed natural curiosities.

Law & More

As well as educating future and qualified barristers, the School extends its reach to a diverse community of people from legal and other backgrounds offering a range of accessible part–time courses in specialist areas of the law.

As Irish and EU law is constantly evolving, our professional development advanced diploma courses provide a comprehensive and practical grounding across specialist areas of the law. Courses benefit legal practitioners, employees and professionals wishing to upskill or fill gaps key to their organisation’s goals.
