King’s Inns Hosts Graduate Member Talk on Ethics and Support for the Employed Bar

On 30 April 2026, King’s Inns welcomed members to an engaging Graduate Member Talk exploring the topic of “Ethics and Support for the Employed Bar in England and Wales.”

The event brought together members of the legal profession for an insightful discussion on the evolving role of the employed barrister, professional identity, ethical considerations, and the importance of support networks within the profession.

The evening featured a keynote address by The Hon Mr Justice David Barniville and was chaired by The Hon Mr Justice Oisín Quinn.

“Barristers working as in-house counsel play a vital role in shaping public policy, enforcing regulatory standards and advising… companies on their day-to-day governance, business and decision-making.” - The Hon Mr Justice David Barniville

Speakers included:

  • Simon Regis, CBE — Deputy Director, Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, and Chair of the Bar Council’s Employed Barristers’ Committee (2026)

  • Hannah Smith — Principal Lawyer, General Pharmaceutical Council (England)

Throughout the discussion, speakers reflected on the opportunities and challenges faced by employed barristers, including professional independence, ethical responsibilities, career development, and the growing importance of community and engagement within the profession.

“The experiences that I've had in my career I would not have had if I stayed at the self-employed Bar.” - Simon Regis

Graduate Member Talks form part of King’s Inns’ ongoing commitment to supporting qualified barristers who have been admitted and called to the Bar of Ireland by the Chief Justice of Ireland, and work as Employed Barristers, be it in the public service, regulatory bodies, law firms, accountancy and consulting firms, or the wider business organisations. These events provide valuable opportunities for networking, professional development, and the exchange of ideas among members of the legal community.

The event was followed by the tradition of Dining.
