Part I - Speaker: Maria McCloskey, Executive Director, IRLI
Topic: Defining the rule of law
As legal practitioners, particularly those working in the human rights space, we hear the term “rule of law” quite often. But what does it mean in practice and how can we, as lawyers, support it? The first part of this presentation will hear from IRLI’s recently appointed Executive Director about what it means to this organisation and how (and why) IRLI uses the expertise of those working in the justice system across the island of Ireland to support the rule of law in other countries.
Part II - Speakers: Immaculate Maluza and Kate Loughran, Programme Lawyers, IRLI
Topic: Admissibility of evidence taken involuntarily
In the second part of the presentation, you will hear from two members of IRLI's Malawi team, Kate Loughran and Immaculate Maluza, on one rule of law issue they are working on: advocating for removal of S176 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Code.
