Three dining terms structure the academic year — Michaelmas, Hilary, and Trinity. Formal dining brings members together in a shared setting, offering the opportunity to engage with barristers, judges, and fellow students from a wide range of professional backgrounds. The tradition has been part of the institution since 1541 and continues to play an important role in its academic and professional culture.
About DiningMooting is where the law stops being abstract and becomes something you have to defend in real time. King’s Inns has a strong tradition of mooting — students compete nationally and internationally, and many say it’s the moment they first felt like a law professional.
The Law Students Debating Society of Ireland (LSDSI), a student–run body originally formed as a debating society in 1830. is also based at King’s Inns.
Beyond mooting, the McCarthy Impromptu Memorial Debate runs annually and is judged by members of the judiciary and the Bar.
The Irish Times Debate, regularly features King’s Inns students, and the school has won it several times.
King’s Inns is housed in a landmark Georgian building on Henrietta Street, designed by James Gandon, architect of Custom House. The setting reflects the institution’s history and significance, and many students find it deepens their commitment to their studies.
